Gundam 00; Athrun Zala (Harofather)

I am getting too old for this.

They said age was a matter of perception; that you were only as old as you felt you were. If that were the case, Athrun mused bitterly, than he must be outstripping his sixty-odd years by at least three times as many.

Never mind that you'd never know it to look at me, eh?

A shadowy little smile played across his face as he strode down one of Krung Thep's broad corridors, the floor beneath his feet groaning with every heavy step he took. Athrun was not well pleased to have been summoned away from Elysium and his comfortable sub-colony to come barreling towards the Earth; even less so when that damned computer was the one issuing the demand.

And just what wrinkle in the 'Great Work' dictates that I and my children need to be in Terran orbit? There's no need to be here for Shani's tests.

Not that they've bothered to tell me what those tests are, of course.

Oh, but he could infer. Veda wanted pilots, after all, and personnel for infiltration, all of whom needed to be more resilient than a human being, and connected to Veda as directly as possible. Elysium's Board had planted the task firmly in his hands (and oh, how Athrun chuckled over that and suspected certain ulterior motives); Veda, and Krung Thep, rejected Rau, poor child. But Shani ...

Shani, they were interested in. Interested in his particular strain.

So here they were, Athrun and Shani -- and Rau, and Grave, his companion-caretaker, a spit into Veda's and Krung Thep's eye -- far, far from home and suffering the attentions of obsessives and fools.

Muttering under his breath, Athrun stared out through the curved glass of one of the station's massive windows. Out there was the Earth, a place he worked and researched for the benefit of; a planet he'd never set foot on and likely never would.

Never, in all my years ...

Sixty-odd years, a good fifty and better as more machine than flesh and blood, left him swiftly running out of patience with Veda and its inscrutable directives. Worse were the heads of Celestial Being's Terran branch; zealots, the lot of them, with not a jot of flexibility. It came, he supposed, from living in what amounted to a militia base and not a proper colony --

A scream of purest agony sliced through his head, internal comms system ringing. Shani's scream. In seconds Athrun was racing through the corridors, faster than any unaugmented human could ever dream of moving.

Nothing. Athrun's lips drew back in a snarl; he tapped into his child directly with a sideways twist of his thoughts and the edge of his sight blossomed with red warnings.

>>Systems disruption immanent.
>>Likelihood of bioshell death: 63% and climbing.

[Father, what ...?]

Rau's transmission flickered into existence in his head as he turned the curve of the hallway with a crash that left a dent in the wall, kicking off to propel himself faster. Shani was in Test Suite 03 with Agents Fawkes and ...

No. Who the bastards were didn't matter.

[Father, what's happened?]

Twin doors loomed ahead, keypads lit sullenly red. Locked. He didn't care and did not slow down.

[Stay in your quarters, Rau. Tell Grave to open his commset, make sure his sidearm is primed, and await further communication.]

[... Understood.]

He hit the doors like a freight train.

Metal squealed against metal, a dozen warnings lighting up notifications in his support systems while he winced at the pain of bloodied dermis shredding against the doors. But it did not matter. With a roar of fury Athrun reared back and drove both fists into the locking mechanisms.

The doors flew inward. He strode past, eyes burning --

Shani. Crumpled on the floor like a broken doll, blood pooling around his head, dying his hair a gruesome shade. A head shot. A Veda-damned head shot they knew where to aim --

The report of a gun rocked him slightly aside; new pain registries flared to life in a burst of brilliance, recording surface injury. Shaking like a leaf in the wind, eyes white with nerves, Agent Nikolai held her weapon out to fire again and it dawned on him that she'd actually fired on him. Krung Thep's finest babbled about Shani's unpredictability, his unnatural, inhuman responses, while they fired on his father.

Inhuman, did they say? Erratic, inhuman? Was that their excuse for the life spilling out across the tiles?

Athrun's eyes flickered to Shani. He pinged again, not looking for an answer from his child, only a status report ...

... Body failing (no surprise; so much, so much blood ...) but the shot failed its purpose. Damage, oh there would be damage, but Shani lived. Nikolai missed his node core.

That gave Athrun time.

He stalked towards the hapless Krung Thep agents, implacable, the hail of their fire doing nothing but tearing dermis and tangling in myomers -- though by the time he'd crossed the wide expanse of white-tiled floor he looked more a shredded steel mannequin than a man -- and charged them over the last dozen paces until the two were crushed against the opposite wall. Bone creaked warningly. He didn't care.

And when he finally spoke it was with the cold control of a machine.

Oh, how he was about to show them the meaning of that word.

He'd got good reason for his various red buttons, he does ...

(Alta has experience putting his parts back in place, besides)

Yup. And the Shani stuff has always been sort of vague before.

(This is very true. And this time there's no Luna to interrupt. *ducks*)

*sneaking like a ninja on the 3DS ~*

I can totally lay out more details about what happened with/to Shani, if you like --
